They take care of you, fix your band-aids, wipe away the tears and support your head when you need a shoulder to cry on. But Christmas Eve 2014, would change all that.
On Christmas Eve my mom felt like she was having some sort of heart attack, she says, “I will get it checked out next week.” After two days of pain she went to the doctor. One doctor turned into a few and ultimately the first mammogram. Her mammogram came back with some issues which lead to doctor number two, three, and four. Her pulmonologist saw a spot, but she needed another scan to see where the spot was growing. Flash forward to February 13, 2015. We have finally found out she has a mass in her lungs that has metalized into her left breast, with additional spots in the lymph nodes, right breast and I am not exactly sure where else. I try to stop at the mass in the lungs. That has been our primary focus, and frankly I just can’t handle any more than the lungs.
We felt like we were getting nowhere. Doctors’ offices seem to take their time when we felt time wasn’t on our side. Now we are sitting at Friday the 13th of March. My mom went in for a simple biopsy. Two weeks, collapsed lungs, weight loss, and a lot of exhaustion later she was finally going home with a doctor telling her she had six months to live. SIX MONTHS!   We hadn’t done all the things we wanted to do yet. This was not enough time and she was not about to give up. So we put on the big girl pants and braced ourselves for a never ending fight.
And on March 26, 2015, our journey with Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer officially began. The next steps were real; reality sank in. We weren’t going to sit back and take a crappy diagnosis of, death. My mom started Chemotherapy and Radiation five days a week, almost immediately. The pain she went through during this time is just unfair and inhumane. Our loved ones shouldn’t have to fight for their lives in even more pain than they are already in. After she completed her first rounds of treatment her scans showed her cancer had spread. We knew we were fighting an uphill battle, but she wasn’t going to give up. My mom had decided at that point she would stop treatment. She valued the quality of her life. We accepted her decision and began the journey with her.

Since then I am no longer 100 percent ignorant when it comes to lung cancer. I have learned, I have cried, I have educated myself on topics I never wanted to know, but most of all, I learned to be there for my mom in way I never imagined.
In November 2016, my brother and I spent some close time with my mom; and I believed it was the last time I would see her coherent and alive. She wasn’t eating, she could barely walk, slept all day and weighed almost 80LBS. I told my now husband this was the end and we needed to get us all together. The following week, her AMAZING Oncologist had her approved for Immunotherapy Treatment – Opdivo. The drug was amazing. It was giving her life again, with less side effects. She went from bed ridden to slowly living life again. What people don’t know or realize when watching the commercial is that the cost is astronomical…$148,000 for about 6 months. At this point I was 90 days from my wedding and 120 days from my brother’s birthday and she was not giving up the fight and she didn’t.

Well, we just surpassed the two-year mark and hit some of the milestones we were afraid wouldn’t come.

Earlier this week my mom was presented with a bill for $14,088.00. “Patient Responsibility- $14,088.00.” HOW IS THIS OKAY. So, my family should decide between food on the table, bills getting paid or my mother’s treatment? THIS IS WHY I FIGHT. NO FAMILY SHOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS. We cherish every day we have with her, but we never know what tomorrow holds. I will use my voice and I will scream from the rooftops until a change is made. I will fight for the breath she yearns for. I will fight so that she can be here for her future grand kids, because she is my mother, my mom, the glue that keeps our family together and the strongest, bravest woman I know. So many families do not get this extra time. Lung Cancer kills 465 Americans every day. My Aunt and Uncle both lost their battle with lung cancer and missed so many incredible milestones. I do not want another family to feel this way.[/fusion_text][fusion_button link=”http://action.lung.org/goto/Krivoy” color=”default” size=”xlarge” stretch=”” type=”” shape=”” target=”_self” title=”” gradient_colors=”|” gradient_hover_colors=”|” accent_color=”” accent_hover_color=”” bevel_color=”” border_width=”” icon=”” icon_position=”left” icon_divider=”no” modal=”” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”1″ animation_offset=”” alignment=”center” class=”” id=””]Support Ashley’s Fundraising Efforts[/fusion_button][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_3″ last=”no” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”center” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_3″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_title size=”2″ content_align=”left” style_type=”default” sep_color=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” class=”” id=””]Colleen Fitzgerald’s Fundraising Page[/fusion_title][fusion_text]On May 5th, 2016 my mom, Linda fell and fractured her right hip and went in immediately for surgery. Three weeks later, she became very sick and we rushed her to the hospital thinking she had an infection. It was determined that she had actually had pneumonia. Then the devastating news came. The Radiologist came in to let us know there was a mass on my mom’s right lung, and it was imperative she sees a Pulmonologists immediately. On June 21st, 2016, my 38th birthday, my mom was officially diagnosed with Stage 4, non-small cell, large cell, neuroendocrine carcinoma, a.k.a. Lung Cancer. The past year has been the hardest, most trying time of our lives. Between chemotherapy treatments, immunotherapy treatments, radiation, hospitalization, pet scans, ultrasounds, medications, pain, sickness, and constant worry, my mother has stayed strong and is fighting with all she has. Sadly, the cancer is winning though.
